Theoretical Concepts of The Modern Business Mind
In this explanation of the theoretical concepts behind the Modern Business Mind and - the subsequent transition into the new working model of understanding - we will be operating under the definitions created by the analogy that the brain is a computer.
- the brain is a computer
- Evolution is the language these computers have been written with
- our operating system has machine learning AI
- the world is the system in which these computers operate
- advancements in technology are system updates
- Society pushes updates and patches in response to these system updates
- Those same patches and updates define the parameters and degrees of freedom in which this AI can learn
TL;DR the new understanding of the Theory behind the Modern Business Mind:
*The Modern Business Mind is that person, or people, who have uncovered their internal fail safe code, understood its program function - and committed to making sure that their personal computer brain is operating within parameters that allow the best software to be integrated, in recognition of the assumption that the traditional methods and processes are outdated and their associated systems of maximum productivity are no longer applicable*
"...the way the creative mind can interact with the present day world is vastly different than any other previous generation. The world is smaller and more connected. Concepts like emotions, activism, impact, value, and simplicity through technology are at the forefront. Though I know this to be true, I also believe it is misconstrued and incorrectly portrayed to the public"
Basically, I think what has happened is that we either refused to, or were quietly manipulated (intentionally or unintentionally) into trying to operate in a new system with old software that is not suited to allow our computers to do the best job. Instead, we make new copycat iterations of the old operating patches in attempt keep up with latest system updates. We did not change our infrastructure, processes, and systems in a way that can scale at the rate we are innovating.
My culprit of choice is standardized institutional learning. This dated system has molded us to match the process it was created for: institutional productivity. It was implemented at the beginning of the industrial era, and designed to be the best series of software updates that would allow our computers to achieve and sustain maximum productivity in an industrial setting. It was a great and highly successful patch, but it wasn't designed in such a way to allow it to be equally as successful in the technologically advanced world that we know today. - so why are we still pushing updates?
I think the big reasoning is that we are basing decisions off of past metrics - the model has indeed proven itself - but we aren't employing analogical learning. We aren't refreshing the data in our working model of creation theory, and we aren't creating new things as a result. We are simply copying what we knew to work. waitbutwhy explained it very well in his description of The Cook and The Chef.
If you read further in that post, you'll see the data behind my assumption is that: When polling creativity as a metric in students, there has been a decline inversely proportionate to time spent in schools. This raises some interesting hypothesis's like: Maybe all humans possess a "creative beast" inside of them that has been the subconsciously submitting a positive response to creation and innovation. Maybe the entrepreneur wave of 2008-2018 is a result of that beast awakening - sparking a new degree of freedom in the parameters of our machine learning. Maybe my own beast awakening is the cause of this blog. (or perhaps I'm deep into the rabbit hole and going insane)
pull out your tinfoil hats and bear with me
I applied this this theory to explain the irrational and explosive nature of the entrepreneur era of the early to mid 2000's. It felt like the dotcom boom was the inevitable global warming effect that loosened the icy grip on our ancient inner beast. The scent of invention and disruption was simply too much to ignore - that never ending excitement of fast paced discovery is the beast's only appetite.
However, traditional software tricked us into believing that our inner animal was indeed a brutish beast only fit to lock away behind the thick iron cages that are operational parameters of "security" and "defined class roles" - lock it away, or else you would lose your status of defined, institutional productivity.
Looking back, it feels like we continued to operate with the proven model of the "Traditional Method Software Series" solely because the fear of failure and losing the ability to turn back to safety: "If you disrupt the traditional, the things we new to be true, the operating rules, what happens?". So we start centralizing and controlling things to manufacture this perception of security over and over again ... yet we can't ever truly contain the beast and its appetite.
That desire to hustle. That little voice in your head that says "your crazy idea IS possible and YOU CAN do it now" is the proof. Going back to the waitbutwhy's post for reference, the section about the "geological flood age", or "flat earthers", started to remind me of something.
I thought about how I have this strange discomfort when engaging in social media marketing and following seeing Instagram entrepreneurs. It felt like those repeat messages of "you can too!" and "drop whatever is making you sad and embrace the suck of entrepreneurship!" were the same laser focus logic employed by the geo-flooders. The messages weren't intended to be wrong or hurtful, they just happened to lead to further implementation of misconstrued parameters in our software. History repeats itself, as we know to be true.
This is where things start to rhyme with the assumption of the institutional culprit, and our fear of replacing the existing software series. The collective human cloud computer was given the parameters to only machine learn with what it knows to be true. This resulted in fooling itself into thinking that the latest copycat trend is actually further axiom like proof that the effectiveness of the Traditional Method Software Series hasn't run dry yet. There are those flag shipping this misconception, and giving us plenty to copy. Through copying, we are supplementing a close replacement for that feeling of creation and innovation. Enter the beast and its appetite.
Deep down you are actually searching for the opportunity to be the Chef. Unfortunately, you are replicating the satisfaction of making something that makes you FEEL creative... keeping the beast in check with and IV drip of nutrition. But the more I describe the inner beast, the more I think of it as a fail safe code written deep within our computer system.
It makes sense - billions of years of evolution engineered our basal platforms to have us crave true innovation. This code reads creative solutions and outputs positive feedback to the AI. We would have stopped at rocks for tools if that instant gratification of discovery wasn't inherent and crucial to our success as a species of computers.
Yet, we accidentally have subjected ourselves to a massive code update that pushed this feedback code way way down in the console - significantly slowing its ability to produce that 1:1 positive feedback and filtering its breakthrough messages. You'll see headlines reporting that things like depression, mental illness, loneliness, stress, and other unsatisfactory effects are at the forefront of our computer troubleshoot log. I see these as bugs caused by trying to use the wrong software to operate in a new system.
Scenario:
The social media entrepreneur is exciting you with the promise of fulfillment, and your fail safe code is picking up on the output signals. It wants to seek out more input signals and allow your computer to operate harmoniously with the others. This "seek input signals" query is resulting in an override of the hardware and forcing us to seek out this grand fulfillment - only to result in the inevitable error code prompt to pop up - caused by using the wrong software to operate in a new system and just throwing hardware at it- this fail safe program can't initiate an update.
This brings me to a reflection on the purpose for the blog: an attempt at trying to capture, understand, celebrate and encourage the Modern Business Mind. Which really is me analyzing any loosely related example I can find with basic questions like "what traits to successful entrepreneurs have" or "what sets successful people a part from the rest of us?"... still I managed to notice a trend.
I kept seeing the same old answers of "be obsessed" "embrace the suck and grind 100hrs a day!" - it just didn't feel right. The separation of these people and their success just can't be that wide from th rest of us. Especially when considering the fact that we can interact with the world around us differently than any other generation before.
which brought me back time and time again to reading up on Elon Musk and trying to understand why and how he does things - waitbutwhy's post gave me the Kool-Aid which had a key undestanding at the bottom of the cup
Elon Musk's ability to break things back down to their principle elements and reason through analogy. This results in a working, organic, theory that can be tested against by way of the scientific method (at the cost of either time, resources, influence, persuasion, or all of them in some sort of combination.)
So, what makes those crazy eccentric people different from the rest of us? they committed to upgrading their computer's software and are aware the bugs specific to their own operating system. They're AI is allowed to fix itself, instead of trying to move forward with the blanket patch updates. Which, I think, is the summation of the epiphany I had in regards to what exactly is the Modern Business Mind that I am trying to capture and understand:
*The Modern Business Mind is that person, or people, who have uncovered their internal fail safe code, understood its program function - and committed to making sure that their personal computer brain is operating within parameters that allow the best software to be integrated, in recognition of the assumption that the traditional methods and processes are outdated and their associated systems of maximum productivity are no longer applicable*
If we apply that, then this blogs true purpose is to search for the proof of the subconscious fail safe code and its program in action - in parallel to showcasing those who have already uncovered theirs and willingly and consciously applied their computers to be productive in the latest systems of modern day operation.
I hope I deliver on this task, because if my theories are correct - then the sharing of this discovery could be the match the ignites the next big wave of human development.
Feel free to comment, critique, and share!
Sincerely,
MBMJeremy
